With my students, earliest piano lessons focus on listening and learning to use their ears effectively - a skill that will reap rewards for a lifetime playing music. However, the time and effort invested in aural training is well worth it and makes a more well-rounded musician. Many students find this part of the practical exam challenging. Besides attaining high scores in aural tests, good aural skills also help overall musical learning. Even though it takes consistent training over a period of time to pick up good aural skills, these skills stay with you for a very long time. Being good at aural whether in an ABRSM exam or in learning music in general is very rewarding. In my teaching experience, I find that many teachers neglect the aural section during piano lessons. Note: Subscores were not available for the 2020 exams.ABRSM aural is a small but essential section of the exam. It is further recommended that the college or university use the overall score to set policy for students seeking general humanities credits. Although each college or university sets its own policy for awarding credit and/or placement for AP Exam scores, it is recommended that for students continuing study in music, subscores be considered along with the overall score.
The subscores help music departments make appropriate decisions about credit and placement when they offer separate courses for written theory and aural skills. It also includes free-response questions calling for realization of a figured bass, realization of a chord progression from Roman numerals, and composition of a bass line to fit a given melody. The nonaural component subscore includes multiple-choice questions requiring score analysis and other multiple-choice questions not related to recorded musical examples. The aural component subscore includes multiple-choice questions related to recorded musical examples, two melodic dictation questions, two harmonic dictation questions, and two sight-singing questions. For AP Music Theory, there are two subscores (1–5): an aural component subscore and a nonaural component subscore.
